I feel like they’re twisting the story some. Cai’er didn’t go through those trials for Houchen. She didn’t have a choice. Her parents and clan tossed her in there hoping she would gain death god powers. Keep in mind that at that time, she had only met him ONCE. And though I know they’re trying to play up the ‘love at first sight’ thing, I don’t feel like they really started being involved like that until after she had grown up and met him again. Saying she went through those trials for Houchen feels forced at best.
