Tbh, I agree with them to an extent. We waited a while for S3 to start, and immediately get hit with a flashback that apparently will last for more than 1 ep. Kinda annoying.

Love that the show is back, but this better not be a fucking flashback season.
l think they call them “midquels”. Yeah, I was rewatching DH recently and this skill reset feels a bit weird 🙂 Also kinda messes up things. E.g. the scene at the festival in S1 Ep 22 where Meng Chuan shyly confesses now feels out of place since this flashback takes place long before that.
Also, they send 15 year olds to fight bandits? “Saints fight demons, not people” was a thing. Their alcoholic dean even refused to show his blade in one of the early episodes.

Mid tier, can’t follow with the story
Story isn’t the highlight of the series, true. But it stands above others in the direction, choreography and sfx, not to mention sound and music!
S1.5 – Extra of yanchu mountain – was also pretty confusing in no small part due to poor translation of the first season. And my god, they like to make characters emerge with almost no introduction.
So yeah, not perfect, but definitely top tier!
